We know that effective connectivity improves productivity and boosts our local economy, which is why developing our transport infrastructure is crucial.

However, congestion is a major issue in Harrogate and Knaresborough. When the relief road idea was abandoned due to its overwhelming unpopularity and the fact that the road it was intended to relieve would be just as busy within two years (since 93% of the traffic is generated internally), several other options were proposed, such as park-and-ride, real-time bus arrival signs at bus shelters, and safe active travel routes. Despite the report costing thousands, none of these initiatives have been implemented. I will champion the delivery of these solutions, both locally and nationally, as it is the responsibility of the council and the mayor.

Safe Travel Choices for All

We need to offer people safe travel choices, whether it’s walking, cycling, or using public transport from their homes to their workplaces or other essential destinations such as schools and hospitals. Our road routes must be safe and well-maintained (no potholes). An ideal system will include:

  • Safe roads and pavements around schools: Protection from speeding cars and pollution. Going to school should be an enjoyable experience!
  • Transport hubs
  • Park-and-ride facilities
  • Public transport with through tickets from start to destination
  • Active travel routes
  • Safe, well-paved roads
  • Appropriate speed limits

Improving Public Transport

Public transport needs to be clean, reliable, affordable, and accessible to everyone. It should serve areas where it’s needed, when it’s needed. Transitioning to an all-electric transport system will increase social mobility, improve air quality, and eliminate a quarter of our greenhouse gas emissions. I will encourage investment in charging infrastructure and promote incentives to accelerate the transition to electric cars, vans, trucks, and buses.

Rail and Freight Infrastructure

  • Rail Upgrades: Upgrades are needed on the rail track (e.g., Starbeck Crossing to reduce waiting times) and adding at least one additional station at Claro Road, which would take hundreds of cars off the road daily and make commuting easier.
  • Freight Transport: In North Yorkshire, 97% of freight is transported by road. We must consider how our network can accommodate this, regardless of fuel type, and support the essential drivers involved.
  • Electrification: We need to replace the old diesel trains with modern electrified lines connecting our region.

Promoting Active Travel and Modal Shift

We need to prioritise active travel development and enable a shift to more environmentally friendly transportation alternatives. Our road infrastructure should support enjoyable journeys and offer various travel options, promoting shared use and modal shift.

Addressing Diverse Needs and Resilience

Recognize that different societal groups, such as men versus women or children versus adults, have varied transportation needs and usage patterns. We must improve the resilience of our transport network to withstand adverse weather conditions.

As Chair of Scrutiny of Transport for the North, I will advocate for these initiatives not only locally but also on a national level.
